WASTEPAPER ARTICLE SERIES #2

This is not your idea of a newspaper article. This is my idea of a joke. It is largely inaccurate, hopelessly infactual, and contains gross misinformation. Something you would not want to take seriously. Proceed at your own peril!

SHANGHAI: Overseas Singaporeans have voiced their support for Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's vision for a vibrant global city.

They are also heartened by the fact it was two hours long of talk, as some of them had subscribed to the cable television network in China specially to watch the National Day Rally.

Mr. See Ray Lee, a Singaporean stationed in Shanghai, said: "Not bad man, he can actually stand there and speak for 2 hours. In Singapore, one movie costs $9.50 on weekends now, and they can't even guarantee it will at least hit 2 hours! So I think watching this rally is money well spent. Afterall, it's always been about the length, not the content."

These overseas Singaporeans live and work thousands of kilometres away but for these Singaporeans, home is where the heart is.

Mdm. Oh Ver Seeh, clearly echoed this view, saying: "When the tax and petrol prices in Singapore rise, my heart jumps. When I hear people being arrested for doing seemingly harmless things in Singapore, my heart thumps. So how can my heart not be with Singapore?"

That's why many Singaporeans in Shanghai spent Sunday night glued to the television watching Channel NewsAsia's live broadcast of the Prime Minister addressing the nation in his annual National Day Rally.

Many businessmen have always looked to the National Day Rally as a model standard to do business - being able to make lots of money yet make customers believe that they aren't losing anything.

And they were in for a treat.

Using slides and video clips, the Prime Minister sketched a vision to turn Singapore into a vibrant global city everyone can call home.

However, Mr. Nevar Maiygrade, an American who was touring Singapore, said upon hearing the Prime Minister's rally, "Everyone? Does that include me? I have no plans to call Singapore home. I have a home and family in Oregon."

Living and working in Shanghai, one of the fastest growing cities in the world, Singaporeans were excited to hear the Prime Minister explain how a small nation like Singapore can compete against the big cities.

The solution to this seem to lie with a people exchange programme with China. Singaporeans are sent to China to work. In return, we get what we so affectionately call Foreign Talents.

Mr. Chye Ner Man, president of the Foreign Talent Self-Marketing Association based in China, said in a Chinese accent: "China you get so many things happening. Everything is big, the land is big, our brains are big. Even our mouths are big. Really touched by what PM says about Singapore small but want to be big. China government welcome Singaporean to work in China, PM also invite China people to work in Singapore and get PR. In the end, whoever can invite more wins, I think. But I think what PM say is true, Singapore can win. Because China got so many people, PM can never finish inviting. Moreover, we China people like Singapore PR because foreign talent like us no need to do National Service. So easy to get, so why not?"

So it looks like the Prime Minister can count on the support more than just the Singaporeans at home to turn his vision into reality. Afterall, it's all about Foreign Talents first.
